چکیده

The Loran coverage availability simulation tool (LCAST) was initially created for the 2004 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Loran technical evaluation report. The tool incorporated the then current models, algorithms and figures of merit being developed for the evaluation report. Models for noise, noise mitigation, signal strength, additional secondary factor (ASF), and envelope to cycle difference (ECD) were important inputs into LCAST. Algorithms include the integrity equation and cycle determination. Other figures of merit include station availability and continuity derived from historical data. These features allowed the tool to make our best estimate of the NPA availability and continuity coverage as well as HEA performance. Since the report, the tool has evolved to incorporate the ability to test new models being developed by the evaluation. Newer noise processing, cycle determination algorithm and ASF variation models have been added. The tool has been modified to test performance changes for different infrastructure scenarios, station selection algorithms and many more. This paper describes the LCAST. It details the design of the tool. It covers the models, algorithms and assumptions that are incorporated into the tool. It also presents some recent scenarios analyzed using LCAST.

Overview of the Safety Analysis of Loran for Aviation

The Loran Integrity Performance Panel (LORIPP) completed its 18 month study of the ability of Loran to meet aviation requirements for Required Navigation Performance 0.3 (RNP 0.3) in March 2004. The study examined Loran ability to meet on the RNP 0.3 requirements on integrity, availability, and continuity and provide a design for “enhanced Loran” which would allow Loran to reasonably provide RN...

Broadcasting Data from an SBAS Reference Network over using LORAN

Space Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) have been developed principally to augment the Global Positioning System (GPS) for aviation and other safety of life applications. An SBAS reference network generates corrections and integrity information that are broadcast primarily using geostationary satellites. However, SBAS information may also be transmitted on auxiliary data links which could incre...

Loran Availability and Continuity Analysis for Required Navigation Performance 0.3

The Loran Integrity Performance Panel (LORIPP) is to complete its 18-month study of whether an enhanced Loran system, which includes modernized equipment, new receiving equipment, and updated operating procedures, could meet aviation requirements for Required Navigation Performance 0.3 (RNP 0.3) in March 2004. There are four primary areas that must be examined in order to demonstrate RNP 0.3 – ...

Mitigating Atmospheric Noise for Loran

With its large-amplitude and short-duration pulses, atmospheric noise, produced by electrical discharges within clouds, dominates the low-frequency spectrum. Unless mitigated, this noise, which enters into the Loran band, can distort a Loran signal within a receiver and can induce cycle selection errors resulting in range measurement errors of 3,000 km. Such errors would induce position errors ...
